God Is Our Refuge: How Can I Find Peace When Life Feels Out of Control?
Psalm 46 | A Message from Open Door Baptist Church in Lynnwood, Washington
Feeling Overwhelmed? You're Not Alone.
Everyone experiences moments when life feels uncertain. A difficult diagnosis, financial stress, broken relationships, or simply the weight of everyday responsibilities can leave us asking, "Where can I find peace?"
Psalm 46 answers that question with one of the most encouraging promises in Scripture:
"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." – Psalm 46:1
God doesn't promise a life without difficulties, but He does promise His presence in the middle of them.
What Does It Mean That God Is Our Refuge?
A refuge is a place of safety—a shelter when the storm arrives.
The Bible reminds us that God is not distant or unaware of our struggles. He is present, faithful, and strong enough to carry us through every season of life.
When circumstances change, God's character never changes.
Instead of placing our confidence in our own strength, Psalm 46 invites us to rest in His.
Why Does God Allow Trouble?
Many people wonder why Christians still experience hardship.
Jesus answered that question when He said,
"In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." (John 16:33)
Faith is not the absence of trouble. Faith is trusting that God is working even when we cannot see the outcome.
Trials often become the moments where God's grace, peace, and power become the most real.
How Can I Find Peace in Difficult Times?
Psalm 46 gives practical encouragement for everyday life.
Remember God's Promises
Instead of focusing on fear, fill your mind with God's Word and His faithfulness.
Spend Time with God
Prayer and Scripture quiet our hearts and remind us that we are never facing life alone.
Trust God's Timing
God's help is always on time, even when it doesn't arrive the way we expected.
"Be Still and Know That I Am God"
These words are not an invitation to do nothing—they are an invitation to trust.
Being still means choosing faith over panic, confidence over worry, and hope over fear because God remains in control.
Even when everything around us feels unstable, He is our unchanging foundation.
Three Truths to Remember Today
✓ God is with you in every trial.
✓ God is stronger than every fear.
✓ God is worthy of your complete trust.
A Question for Reflection
What burden are you carrying today that you need to place in God's hands?
Take a few moments to read Psalm 46, pray, and remember that the God who cared for His people throughout history is the same God who walks with you today.
